Rado, most famous for their high tech ceramics and hardness of case manufacturing, were formed in 1957 following the successful growth of the Schlup & Co. clockwork factory which was started by three brothers in 1917. Werner, Ernst and Fritz Schlup built the business over a 40 year period until they became Rado Uhren AG in 1957 starting the remarkable history of Rado watches.

Rado produced their first “Scratch Proof” watch in 1962 and has continued developing robust and strong watches and are reputed to have created the hardest watch in the world which has a hardness rating of 10000 vickers.

Today, Rado are still going strong. They sell their watches through a network of over 5000 retailers worldwide and have over 400 service centres.

We repair Rado watches on the premises prices starting at just £80 for a full stripdown service. Should your Rado be broken or in need of service please contact us and we will be most happy to provide further details.

To all my current and potential clients – as a family we have decided to move from Spalding to Market Rasen in Lincolnshire (which is close to Lincoln) and as I work from home this means I will be working from this location as from next week (20th Feb 2012).

I will still receive personal visits but, as always, this must be by appointment only.

My phone number will be changing so it will be best to communicate via e-mail for the next week until BT installs a new line (use the contact form on this site). I will post the number as soon as I get it.

In the meantime I can also be contacted on my mobile phone which is currently 07842936774

In 1999 Omega released it’s calibre 2500 movement with a Co-Axial escapement.

The co-axial escapement was a revolutionary system developed by George Daniels (a British watchmaker) which, in effect, reduced friction and thus virtually eliminating the requirement for lubrication in the escapement of the watch. Theoretically this ensures greater accuracy over time and reduces the need for servicing.

This is revolutionary because the watch escapement and the theory behind it has been mostly unchanged for over 200 years.

Here we have an Omega Seamaster with a co-axial escapement.

Breitling watch repair. Valjoux 7750.

This watch was recently serviced incorrectly. I found several issues and one glaringly obvious fault.

First of all it was aparent that the balance wheel was not turning correctly (sort of sticky) – this is usually due to a bent pivot (quite unlikely with Incabloc settings), or lack of lubrication. The real reason is illustrated below.

I also found that the watch was heavily over-oiled especially the train (train of wheels) pivot holes. A huge (in watch terms) blob of grease was found on the escape wheel.

This nice old Rotary was handed in for repair with a broken stem and filthy movement. The problem is with the stem. The movement has no calibre and does not appear in any of our reference books so I have no choice other than to make a new winding stem from scratch.

I do this with blue pivot steel. First annealing the steel to make it easier to turn and cut the thread. Here are some pictures of my work.
